Fresh Cut Flower Care
Tips to Keep Your Blooms Fresh
Dirty Boot Farm harvests flowers from our field for your bouquet. After you receive your bouquet, you can help your fresh flowers last longer by following these guidelines.
Tip #1 Once you arrive home with your blooms always keep the mason jar filled with fresh water.
Tip #2 Every few days, remove the flowers from the mason jar and re-cut the stems. Cut off approximately one inch from the bottom of the stem. It is important to cut the stem at an angle to allow the flower the best chance to take up water. Use a sharp knife or floral scissors to ensure a clean cut.
Tip #3 Keep the water level high to ensure every stem receives a drink. When you completely change the water, you should also thoroughly clean the container.
Tip #4 Remove any spent or damaged blooms or foliage that falls below the waterline. Foliage that is left will quickly break down and form bacteria and fungi.
Tip #5 Make sure your flowers are kept away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents and directly under ceiling fans. Also avoid placing fresh flowers near ripening fruit, which releases tiny amounts of ethylene gas that can age them prematurely.
Tip #6 During the warmest months you can perk up your flowers with a tsp. of sugar mixed into freshly changed water. A drop of apple cider vinegar will also help to stave off bacteria.
